For Episode 680 of the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast, I interviewed Brett Mengler about land-based fishing for Giant Trevally (GTs) in central and north Queensland. Brett shares his extensive knowledge and experience on how to target these powerful fish from the shore. This guide provides practical advice for anglers looking to catch GTs without the need for a boat.
Understanding the Appeal of Land-Based GT Fishing
Land-based fishing for GTs offers several advantages: it is highly accessible as it eliminates the need for a boat, thereby reducing costs and logistical challenges. Additionally, it provides flexibility, allowing anglers to fish during short windows of time, such as before or after work. The simplicity of this method, often requiring just a rod, a backpack, and some lures, makes it appealing to many.
Key Strategies for Land-Based GT Fishing
Location and Timing
Spot selection is crucial. Identify areas with structure such as rocky outcrops, headlands, and reefs. Use Google Maps and satellite views to plan your spots. Considering the tides and wind direction is also important; GTs can be found in both shallow and deep waters, but high tide and wind pushing bait towards the shore are ideal. Spend time observing the water before casting to look for signs of baitfish and predatory activity.
Tackle and Gear
- Rods and Reels: Use a medium (PE 2-3) and a heavy (PE 6-8) rod. A nine-foot rod is ideal for casting long distances.
- Lines and Leaders: Use 30-40 lb braid for medium setups and 50-80 lb braid for heavy setups. Leaders should range from 40-60 lb for medium and up to 120-200 lb for heavy setups.
Lures
- Poppers: 150-180 mm tuna style poppers are effective. Avoid overly large poppers to prevent spooking fish.
- Stickbaits: Both floating and sinking stickbaits in the 180 mm range are useful, especially in windy conditions.
- Bibbed Minnows: Useful in windy conditions, though not always as effective.
Techniques
Use varied retrieval techniques with poppers, including short, sharp pops and steady walks. With stickbaits, use a mix of erratic and smooth retrieves to mimic injured baitfish. When fighting the fish, use heavy drag settings to control the fish and prevent it from reaching structure. Apply pressure in the opposite direction to where you want the fish to go.
Tips for Success
Adaptability is key. Be prepared to switch techniques and target different species if GTs are not cooperating and enjoy chasing some queenfish, coral trout or barra from the rocks instead. Persistence is crucial as GT fishing can be tough; regular outings increase the chances of success. Always be mindful of safety, considering potential hazards like crocodiles and jellyfish.
